My Name Is Asher Lev
World Premiere By AARON POSNER Adapted from the novel by CHAIM POTOK Directed by AARON POSNER Artistic Consulting by ADENA POTOK On the Arcadia Stage January 8 - March 15, 2009
Asher Lev is a young Hassidic artist torn between his observant Jewish community and his need to create. His artistic genius threatens his relationship with his parents and community and weighs heavily on his conscience. In 1999, the Arden presented Aaron Posner and Chaim Potok's co-adaptation of Potok's classic novel The Chosen to critical and audience acclaim. Posner, in consultation with Adena Potok, now introduces this world premiere based on Potok's novel, My Name Is Asher Lev.Recommended for 8th/9th grade students and older. There is brief nudity in the context of an artist's model. Critical Acclaim– "Exquisite adaptation... beautifully created by a three-actor cast... evocative... Miller plays Asher Lev with a blend of reverence and determination that electrifies his delivery; seeing him dissect the character's young life is like watching a piece of every American kid who breaks away from his parents and their ideals." –Philadelphia Inquirer [Review] "Superbly adapted... a passionate and poignant coming of age story... Posner's direction is wonderfully creative... a production that is as intimate as a family dinner and as vast as a young man's dreams... My Name Is Asher Lev is the first must-see production of 2009." –Philadelphia Weekly "A fascinating coming-of-age story seamlessly blended with a debate about the nature of art... This is a marvelous evening of theater: intimate, sincere, magical." –Philadelphia City Paper "The Arden has an impressive birth on its hands... monumental... perfect... staged ingeniously. Bravo to the Arden for this commission and to these actors. Very moving." –WRTI "There is something for everyone - traditionalist or revolutionary, parent or child. They nailed it... superb." –The Bulletin "Not a dry eye in the house." –Variety.com "Heller delivers an inspired performance in each of his several roles... Superb acting and precise direction…this production crackles and pops with life." –CurtainUp "A truly beautiful theatrical experience... In just 90 fast-moving minutes, it sparkles with life as it examines a struggle as old as the Torah and as new as the latest brush strokes on Asher's canvas." –Talkin' Broadway Behind the Scenes– From WHYY's Arts and Culture desk, Alex Schmidt reports on My Name Is Asher Lev as the first commissioned play by the Arden to hit the stage. [Listen] Jason Peifer of WRTI's Creatively Speaking profiles My Name Is Asher Lev, including interviews with Artistic Consultant Adena Potok, Dramaturg Michele Volansky, and adaptor/director Aaron Posner.
