Endgame
By SAMUEL BECKETT
Directed by EDWARD SOBEL On the Arcadia Stage January 17 - March 10, 2013
Hamm can’t stand up. Clov can’t sit down. Neither can leave the single room they’ve shared for who knows how long. For them, the end is in the beginning. Nobel Prize winner Samuel Beckett’s wicked humor comes alive on the Arden’s stage for the first time, directed by Edward Sobel (Clybourne Park and Superior Donuts). Beckett’s writing, in the space between vaudeville and Pinter, Chaplin and Stoppard, shows us that nothing is funnier than unhappiness. Recommended for 9th grade and older.
“Beckett’s plays became the cornerstone of 20th century theater.”

Critical Acclaim– “The Arden Theatre Company takes a swing and hits a theatrical home run with their thrilling production of Samuel Beckett’s challenging post-World War II drama Endgame…the Arden deserves credit for taking a chance with Endgame — and for not simply testing the boundaries of theater, but seeking to redefine it.” –Philadelphia Weekly [Read More] "Two of Philadelphia’s most likeable actors, Scott Greer and James Ijames…treating Beckett’s language as conversation between characters.” An Endgame that artfully — with heart and, yes, humor — reveals four characters waiting for their world to end.” –City Paper [Read More] "The Arden’s distinguished cast brings a sense of individual humanity to Beckett’s inherent mixture of absurdity and tragicomedy.” –Stage Magazine [Read More] "Infinitely watchable” –Edge Philadelphia [Read More] "A fresh look at Beckett’s classic.” –Broad Street Review [Read More] |
