A Raisin in the Sun
By LORRAINE HANSBERRY
Directed by WALTER DALLAS
On the F. Otto Haas Stage
March 7 - April 21, 2013   EXTENDED BY DEMAND!

In Chicago’s South Side in the early 1950s, a life insurance check sent to the Younger’s home arrives with the promise of change. This African American family then considers buying a house in the all-white Clybourne Park, but conflicting aspirations and a neighborhood’s intolerance threaten the dream’s reality. Walter Dallas (The Piano Lesson, Blue Door) directs this classic drama that paved the way for the African American voice to be heard on stage.

Critical Acclaim–

“The play addresses current racial issues as much as those in its own time…These characters are us in one way or another.”
–Inquirer   [Read More]

Joilet Harris: "Every move she makes, every detail in her physical and vocal expression is right — she embodies the determination to march forward with faith in the world even as the world is determined to push her back… In a perfect world this play would be a dated history piece. At the Arden, it carries a real sense of urgency.”
–WHYY   [Read More]

“In ways that are simultaneously thrilling and frightening, Raisin, now getting a vibrant production at the Arden Theatre Company, feels as vital as ever… Dallas’ production is an intriguing mix of tradition and new perceptions. He and his distinguished cast bring a note of humor and lightness I’ve never seen before… Hansberry’s words resonate as powerfully as ever.”
–City Paper   [Read More]

“The best acting is that which doesn't seem like acting at all. Case in point: "A Raisin in the Sun… the cast has theatrical gold to work with here. Throw in Walter Dallas' unobtrusive direction and an ultrarealistic stage by Daniel Conway that expertly captures a big-city tenement of the mid-20th century, and you have a special night of theater.”
–Daily News   [Read More]

“Stirring and funny, heartwarming and heartbreaking, and, above all, inspiring”
–Stage Magazine   [Read More]

“This show explodes on stage…a dream realized”
–Broadway World   [Read More]

“More than a half century after its Broadway debut, Lorraine Hansberry's revolutionary play retains its power.”
–Talkin' Broadway   [Read More]

“One of the greatest American plays of the last half of the 20th century… thrillingly on view at the Arden.”
