THE WRITERS' ROOM
A new play residency program
Now in its third year, the Writers’ Room, the Arden’s new play development residency, invites audiences to follow a playwright as they develop a play from page to stage. Following the success of previous Writers’ Room playwrights Wendy McLeod and Rachel Bonds, Arden Theatre Company is excited to announce Philadelphia playwright Michael Hollinger as the Arden’s playwright in residence.
About Michael Hollinger:
Michael Hollinger is the playwright of Ghost-Writer, Opus, Tooth and Claw, Red Herring, Incorruptible, An Empty Plate in the Café Du Grand Boeuf,
and Tiny Island
, all of which premiered at the Arden. These plays have enjoyed numerous productions around the country (including Actors Theatre of Louisville, the Old Globe, Seattle Rep, Northlight Theatre, Portland Center Stage, PlayMakers Rep, TheatreWorks, People’s Light &Theatre Company, Berkshire Theatre Festival, and many others), in New York City (Primary Stages and Ensemble Studio Theatre), and abroad (London, Paris, Tokyo, Athens, Poland, and Slovenia). Michael’s other awards include a Harold & Mimi Steinberg New Play Citation from the American Theatre Critics Association, a Roger L. Stevens Award from the Kennedy Center's Fund for New American Plays, a Mid-Atlantic Emmy Award, a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, an Edgerton Foundation New American Plays Award, the F. Otto Haas Award for an Emerging Theatre Artist, three Barrymore Awards for Outstanding New Play, nominations for Lucille Lortel and John Gassner Awards, a commission from the Ensemble Studio Theatre/Alfred P. Sloan Science and Technology Project, and fellowships from the Independence Foundation, Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, and Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
He is an alumnus of New Dramatists, holds a Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance from Oberlin Conservatory, and a Master of Arts in Theatre from Villanova University, where, as Associate Professor of Theatre, he currently teaches Playwriting, Solo Performance, Songwriting, and Collaborative Theatremaking.
About the Play:
Michael will be in residency with the Arden developing a new play that will premiere as part of the Arden’s 2014/15 season. The currently untitled play will be directed by Arden Artistic Director Terry Nolen, in his first collaboration with Michael since the premiere of Opus. Drawing inspiration from a newspaper article about a legal battle over a kidney donation, secrets get revealed in this new comedy that considers what we owe our parents and our children.
