Stick Fly
By LYDIA R. DIAMOND
Directed by WALTER DALLAS
On the Arcadia Stage
October 24 - December 22, 2013

One summer weekend on Martha's Vineyard, the LeVay brothers bring their girlfriends home to meet the parents. Between breakfast and board games, rivalries ignite, opinions flare, and secrets unravel. Join us for this raucous of-the-moment portrait of an affluent African-American family.

Stick Fly contains profanity and sexual references. Recommended for 9th grade and above.

"Acutely observant, laugh-out-loud funny, and complicated as only real human stories can be."

Critical Acclaim–

"Lydia Diamond's Stick Fly, currently on stage in a marvelous production at the Arden, is...at once traditional, and boldly inventive. Diamond's script positively zings with good lines and smart ideas. And best of all - it's funny and shocking at the same time. The acting is exceptionally fine across the board - these are difficult, complex roles, and they're realized here with subtlety. Hats off to Arden Theatre - with Stick Fly following its highly praised production of Parade, and its Hamilton Family Arts Center soon to open down the block, this company is firing on all cylinders."

"Drawing-room comedies are supposed to be classics from a post-Victorian era, in which amusing situations play themselves out in ways that don't leave lasting scars. Then comes Stick Fly...This literary tour de force by Lydia R. Diamond honors drawing-room's too-tidy-to-be-true plot turns, which gets even more challenging as her modern-character tensions become almost too messy to resolve...But can you imagine drawing-room comedy master Oscar Wilde handling such bad-ass characters?"

"A pressure cooker on a high flame...Diamond deftly mixes race, mobility and family matters... In the hands of the playwright, who's invested these characters with revelations big and small, you'll be surprised as if a wave hit you just off the Vineyard's sands."

"Ardens Stick Fly is intelligent and entertaining, a combination thats as almost rare as the people we encounter in it."

"Diamond's observations about family, sex and class are universal ones, sure to resonate with audience members of any background. Stick Fly will give you much to think about, especially in a fine production like this one."

"This play will make you laugh, tear up with emotion, and encourage a discussion after the play is over...a perfect theatrical experience."
–Broadway World   [Read More]

"STICK FLY presents an inventive look at race and class, but also a ruthlessly funny study of universally resonant interpersonal dynamics-another make-you-think evening of theater delivered beautifully by the Arden."
