Great Expectations
Based on the book by CHARLES DICKENS
Adapted by GALE CHILDS DALY
Directed by MATTHEW DECKER
On the Arcadia
October 23 - December 21, 2014   EXTENDED BY POPULAR DEMAND!

Charles Dickens’ classic coming-of-age novel springs to life on the Arden stage! As a boy, Pip has three encounters that will change his life: with the escaped convict Magwitch, with the bewitching and cold Estella, and with the unhinged Miss Havisham. When Pip comes into an unexpected fortune, he begins the life of a gentleman, though his past is not so easily left behind. Six actors play over 40 characters bringing this Victorian classic alive in a riveting tale of class, ambition, and love.

“Josh Carpenter … gives a vivid depiction of Dickens' character Pip.”

“Sally Mercer is excellent as Miss Havisham, and Kate Czajkowski shines as Estella.”

“The entertaining and versatile Doug Hara plays a clownish actor and a best buddy among his roles, and Brian McCann is a perfectly austere lawyer one moment, a decrepit criminal the next.”

“Lindsay Smiling is particularly fine at juggling the dialects of the many different characters he plays.”

“A production that made me laugh in a way I didn’t think possible.”

“Mercer’s ability to capture the soul of the fiercely angry woman was remarkable.”

“As fine an ensemble as you’re likely to see all year is brilliantly directed by Decker, who blocked the twists and turns with meticulous precision and precise timing.”

“Josh Carpenter as Pip … succeeds in personifying youthful eagerness and hesitation while concealing his expectations for life, and for the cold and beautiful Estella played with exquisite hauteur by Kate Czajkowski.”

“Sally Mercer of Pottstown is a forbidding and yet ethereal Miss Havisham, sewn into her past as tightly as the wedding dress she always wears.”
