The Whipping Man
By MATTHEW LOPEZ
Directed by MATT PFEIFFER
On the Arcadia Stage
October 27 - December 18, 2011

A Jewish Confederate soldier returns to his home, reuniting with his family’s former slaves. Amidst the rubble from the Civil War, these three men gather to create order, honor their shared faith and celebrate newfound freedom on Passover. We welcome Philadelphia actors Johnnie Hobbs, Jr. and James Ijames back to the Arden stage in this universal story of legacy and redemption.

Recommended for 8th grade and older. Contains racial slurs and one scene of explicit physical trauma.

Critical Acclaim–

“Arden’s production is beautifully executed. During the holiday season, while other companies mount heartwarming musicals and lighthearted comedies aimed at the entire family, the Arden provides a welcome alternative with a play that shows that American families come in many different shapes, sizes and colors. “

"An immensely satisfying and stirring drama that shows that some struggles are universal and timeless."

"Does not modernize or rework the past. It does something far better — by making it live."

"Director Matt Pfeiffer skillfully gives the entire evening a dilapidated look and sense of urgency that is hard to shake...Hobbs, Ijames and Nickell fill the stage with great chemistry and energy."
